smoke- volatile orgasmic compound or voc as they are usually refer-ed to, cover many major KISS tunes including strutter, black diamond and cold gin. as number one groupie Liberty Bell has shouted out loud on a number of occasions " i wanna rock and roll all night and part of the day!!!
"You can't seriously say that Refused doesn't get respect. The Shape of Punk to Come is like a bible."
Agreed, in certain circles, but this discussion has been pretty open-ended as to how you define "never heard of" or "get's no respect." As long as people are posting bands like Minutemen, Big Black, and Drive Like Jehu on here, I figured Refused was fair game as well. Drive Like Jehu was way more influential in my shitty little central Pa. scene than Refused ever was.
VOC is not a KISS cover band smoke. so the discoesqe "i was made for lovin you didnt make it." in fact only songs from the first two discs were considered. its worth a deuce!

fantastic call on Rachel's they are beautiful
just finished up a massive animation/flash movie presentation and i used the title track from 'systems/layers' as the music which might actually be illegal... so keep that on the DL ...
while i'd like to take credit, it was actually southpaw that mentioned rachel's first. i just noted that they were louisvillians. i particularly love their 'egon schiele' album.
Pain Teens (mentioned by the Texans earlier in this thread) were rad...I saw themin Seattle around 1993...I think it was a show with another RAD band,
the Boredoms
Cummon. CAN aren't obscure! Irmin Schmit's 'Soundtracks' compilation is and it's fabulous. Think a more musically sophisticated Tangerine with the odd accordion and saxophone thrown in.
Owing to Vangelis, perhaps Aphrodite's Child isn't really obscure, but '666' is a masterpiece.
i'm going have to jump in here on this can argument and say that even though they were an extremely influential band, they are still kind of obsucre, especially compared to a lot of music that has been listed here.
and for the most part they are from the 70's.
and any can fan that hasn't watched the DVDs, should.
Peaches - my latest favorite, genre best described as Electroclash, maybe if you cross Joan Jett with Prince and add a political message. On tour right now, I highly recommend going to the show if she is near you, you can't be a prude if you do. Very entertaining!
Sam Prekop (from Cake who I'm not wild about, but the solo work is awesome)
The Books
Cibo Matto
Bran Van 3000
Esthero
Lemon Jelly
Zilla
every time i hear peaches 'f*ck the pain away' i laugh... all the kids in my highschool would blast that at parties cause they thought it made them super cool and what not
Yeah...it's a bummer when the cool realitively unknown gems get co-opted for a packaged lifestyle mass marketing scheme. Good for Peaches tho. Maybe they will start playing Peaches CD's at Starbuck's! Can you imagine standing in line to order your latte, when in the background you hear "f*ck the pain away"...
Everyone's favorite band that no one has ever heard of...
I meant the new lows; apparently the new low is a different band
the microphones/phil and aRgyle

ahem...mr. Strawbeary, Peaches and Cibo Matto are only obscure if you wear pleated Dockers!
perhaps I misunderstood the desired level of obscurity. most people I know don't know either.
Although I did hear Peaches on a Gap (?) commercial as of late. DANG!
And that's Ms. Strawbeary. See rationalist, I get mistaken for a dood too.
