on the subject of outhouses, my mum grew up without plumbing of the modern sort (was never installed on the farm, even by the 60's when she moved into town...), but tells the story of how her 3 big brothers planted her in the old outhouse pit after they had dug a new one and limed the old...she was apparently up to her knees in "stuff" and cried and cried...she laughs when she tells the story, but must not have been fun. apparently there are unforseen hazards involved in outhouses...and should not be mixed with teenage brothers who make their own beer.
It's not that they all do it, but two different people did today and it really grated on a nerve. It's really silly what the various types of designers decide makes them superior to the others.
isn't it really just a matter of deciding you're superior to others and then simply allowing all of the evidence reinforce your decision? that's what i did.
I finally got the latest Ike Reilly Assassination release and it is soooooo amazingly good that all I want to do is drive around in my convertible on this gorgeous fall day while cranking it loud!!!

i went to fishers and measured a part of a house. there was a built in media cabinet so i opened it up to get the depth on the cd player was some kenny g and david sanborn and some other smooth jazz as well. still i guess in the land of mcmansions i would rather see that on there than some music that i actually like.
Sad as it is, smooth jazz radio stations have the highest ratings (and generate the highest ad revenues) of any format. I suspect this is due in large part to them being used as background music in stores, doctors offices, etc.

first week - completed. It culminated with a presentation to the Chief Minister (political leader of the country). He's known to be a serious micro manager - fancies himself an imagineer. But it went well he really fell for our ideas so I'm stoked. Celebrated with some drinks with some drinks and am seriously hungover. Ended up skinny dipping by my neighbours pool who are still away in the US...something I'd only do if i was without my senses.
anyhow...on the whole new offices, here's my new digs at the MDC soon the walls will be covered in full size (2m long) posters of the concept masterplan

My office is moving next week. just down one floor to their former space (prior to the divorce). The other half of the firm tanked and moved out, while we outgrew the interim office and have been stacked like pancakes for the past few months. don't think there are any professional movers showing up, so on top of all the deadlines and projects, we need to find time to pack and move our stuff. The good news is that we'll be hiring (jonas, beta, A) so start sending your resumes!
It's been a while. Sorry for not being around much, but times is busy. I see my post is with good timing though. I am also in the process of moving. Well, it will probably be another six weeks before that happens. Damn, I've been saying six weeks for at least six weeks.
Below are a couple of pics of the store front space we are renting. There will be a conference area in the front, room for four desks, and a backroom for storage, servers, etc. Our desks will have carmel colored bamboo ply tops on a steel tube frames. There will be a series of blackened steel panels that will be inline with the slot in the wall on the conference side. The steel panels will be used to display work during client presentations. On the other side of the slot is the studio area. Here the steel panels will shift to a steel frame with homosote panels for pin up areas at the desks.
We also just did a launch of our new website last night. Still some bugs to be worked out. Lots of good changes. The home page has a featured project section. We spent quite a bit of time photographing our work, adding some new projects, and adding some new work to existing projects. The image area to show the work is a bit larger too. Take a look and enjoy.
Today was the big local neighborhood historic home tour. My good friends had their house on the tour; it is a beautiful home, very tasteful Arts and Crafts style. I did a little drawing for them of how the attic space could be built-out to a nice sitting room for an in-law suite. I did the drawing for free and they let me put a box of my business cards next to it, a sweet little barter for both of us. And they are wonderful people.
But oh my god, most of the hosuses on the tour....well, I fear that the market for custom residential work is just getting smaller and smaller as everyone feels they can do it themselves. I've never seen so much chintz curtainry exactly matching the chair upholstery exactly matching the toilet skirt which has the same tones as the faux paint on the library walls. Ugh. Some people really know how to take a perfectly good historic home and destroy it with their own "personality".
Sorry to be so harsh but honestly: People have no idea what good design is. But I guess if they are happy in their home that's good enough.

Luckily it was a gorgeous day for a walk outside and I just returned from a wine gathering celebrating the fact that my friends can now get their house dirty again for the first time in 3 weeks. It's a lovely midwestern fall evening.
Congrats on the big moves and new venues, everyone! Very exciting to think of how being in a new space can change your perception and work.

people in nice homes without much taste is i think the norm, isn't it? they have shows on japanese tv where the homes of the rich and famous are visited and they almost invariably are filled with (metaphorically speaking) bobbling chihuahua head dolls...
my response to that is you ain't nothing yet. I believe bad design sense is an intuitive plague that is running/ruinning our collective societies. As well as some architects mind you. Stop the madness.

on another note, a quiet afternoon of recovery (post hangover) was destroyed by a consultant behaving like a child. So I had to get out of my bed - I was pre-nap when the call came in and headed to work and then to the consultants rental, where is was relaxing on his terrace with a drink and fag in hand. I'm so happy I won't have much more of this left...its wearing thin.
My focus has shifted into this masterplan...looking forward to showing you how far we've come in just a week

Myriam, I did indeed make it to the game, and it was pretty crazy. Husky stadium is a very loud venue, and it really showed in the number of false-start penalties.
up on a sunday morning flipped the tv on and their is the boss with the e street band. seems they got a new record coming out and they perform outside in nyc for what i guess is the sunday morning today show. well the boss belts out this new tune which is obviously about the iraq war as the chorus is something like "who'll be the last to die for this mistake etc..." well the people in the crowd are smilin and happy like its a jimmy buffett song about margaritas or happy hour. people are so fucking vapid. here's one of my fave clips of ThEbOsS!

It looks like it's shaping up to be another gorgeous midwest fall day, here, with a cool breeze and perfect blue skies in the morning. I think I will go get a nutella crepe and wash it down with some coffee before doing a little birthday gift-shopping at my local shops. Then I will head into work for 2 hours to help a buddy on a CD set and then we are going kite-flying when the afternoon winds kick up on the lake! Yay!
Yesterday we bbq-ed, roast marinated chicken, roast peppers, roast corn on the cob, and then put the whole thing on hot flamed tortillas with sour cream, onions, lettuce, and refried beans.... MMMM!

I was wondering about the noise in the stadium--it sounded noticeably loud on TV, but then I thought it might be the mics or something. Near the end I did notice the sportcasters have to suddenly amp up their mics because the crowd got so crazy. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Also, those shots of Seattle made me think once again that I HAVE to go visit. It looks like the whole city is covered in pines!!!
