today my office mates started playing christmas music and i'm sure it will be on solidly for at least the next three weeks. i hope i'll be able to find the strength to get through this without going completely insane. i've never been so thankful to have my ipod and a good pair of headphones to drown it all out. bah humbug!
Actually, I just bought the John Waters Christmas album and it's pretty funny. You should play that in the office. Nothing's finer than hearing Sleigh Ride by the Chipmunks.
holiday music can certainly be annoying...but i'm not sure it ia any worse than the sappy adult soft-rock station that one of my co-workers listened to during the other 11 months of the year.
thankfully, the ipod came out about then and it might have literally saved someones life in this case since i was debating whether to simply kill myself or take out the whole firm post-office style.
I ran across a few tunes from 'Trans Sibreian Orchestra' that were pretty cool - and wintery, if not specifically christmas-oriented. http://www.trans-siberian.com/intro.html
I third the motion on the Run DMC...damn now I gots to go back to Ameoba.
As for your work situation...it could be worse. My friend worked in an office (engineering not arch) where they had Muzak piped in ALL THE FRIGGING TIME and there was a "no headphones" rule in full effect.
Talk about low employee morale and high turnover.
Merry Christmas from the Family - Robert Earl Keen
Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
at our Christmas party.
We were drinkin' champagne punch and homemade eggnog.
Little sister brought her new boyfriend.
He was a Mexican.
We didn't know what to think of him
until he sang Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad.
Brother Ken brought his kids with him-
the three from his first wife Lynn,
and the two identical twins
from his second wife Mary Nell.
Of course he brought his new wife, Kay-
who talks all about AA,
chain smokin' while the stereo plays
Noel, Noel, the First Noel.
Carve the turkey, turn the ballgame on.
Mix margaritas when the eggnog's gone.
Send somebody to the Quik Pak store,
we need some icing and extension cords,
a can of bean dip and some Diet Rite,
a box of tampons and some more Burl Ives.
Halleluia everybody say cheese,
Merry Christmas from the Family.
Fran and Rita drove from Harlogen.
I can't remember how I'm kin to them.
But when they tried to plug their motor home in,
they blew our Christmas lights.
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
so we all waited out on our front lawn.
He threw the breaker and the lights came on
and we sang Silent Night, oh Silent Night.
Carve the turkey, turn the ballgame on
Make bloody marys cause we all want one.
Send somebody to the Stop 'N Go,
we need some celery and a can of fake snow,
a bag of lemons and some Diet Sprite,
a box of tampons and some Salem Lights.
Halleluia everybody say cheese,
Merry Christmas from the Family.
Feliz Navidad...
[i swear i thought that 'more burl ives' line was 'marlboro lights', but the internet can't be wrong. right?]
It's holiday music from here to Jan 1 in the liberty bell household!
But good ones, for godssake NOT Celine Dion or anything contemporary country. In fact almost nothing contemporary, period. Johnny Cash's Christmas album is the closest to country I have, his Blue Christmas is a nice break from hearing Elvis' version, though they both have their time and place.
How could I NOT know that Mojo Nixon has a holiday CD?!?!?! I'm buying it today.
Other good ones:
Esquivel's holiday release - "Feliz Navidad, baybee..."
The Beach Boys of course
Phil Spector's Holiday Gift for You - totally awesome
Vince Guaraldi, of course
Bing Crosby, of course.
Holiday with the Rat Pack, of course.
A doo-wop christmas collection.
A gospel collection including Mahalia Jackson singing Oh Holy Night and Stevie Wonder singing Ave Maria - makes me cry every time
Chrissie Hynde's 2000 Miles also turns me into a fountain. I'm such a sap.
But really, what are you supposed to listen to while making christmas cookies, Portishead? Bring on the jingly janglys!!!
i tire quickly from holiday music but here are a few i like.
i can hang with james brown santa claus go straight to the ghetto ...its the godfather can he mess anything up? (thats one of those rhetorical questions so don't answer that)
Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
Pitch up your reindeer. Uh!
Go straight to the ghetto.
Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
And every stockings you buy,
The kids are gonna love you. So, Uh!
Leave a toy for Johnny.
Leave a dog for Mary.
Leave something pretty for Donnie.
And don't forget about Gary.
Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
Tell him James Brown sent you. Ha!
Go straight to the ghetto.
You know that I know that you will see
Cause' that was once. Me.
Hit it! Hit it!
You see mothers and soul brothers.
Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
Santa Clause, oh lord, go straight to the ghetto.
And every stockings you buy,
The kids are gonna love you.
So, pick up a stocking you find.
You'll know they need you.
So, I'm begging you Santa Clause,
Go straight to the ghetto.
If anyone wanna know,
Tell him James Brown told you.
So, Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
Never thought I realized, I'll be singing a song
With one of you. My!
Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
Don't leave nothing for me.
I have you. Can't you see?
Santa Clause, go straight to the ghetto.
Santa Clause, the soul brothers need you.
So, Santa Clause, tell him James Brown sent you...
santa baby by ertha kitt so wrong, yet so right. what else says fuck me santa like this song?
Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree, for me
I've been an awful good girl
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa baby, an out-of-space convertible too, light blue
I'll wait up for you dear
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Think of all the fun I've missed
Think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed
Next year I could be oh so good
If you'd check off my Christmas list
Boo doo bee doo
Santa honey, I wanna yacht and really that's
Not a lot
I've been an angel all year
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa cutie, there's one thing I really do need, the deed
To a platinum mine
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Santa baby, I'm filling my stocking with a duplex, and checks
Sign your 'X' on the line
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations bought at Tiffany's
I really do believe in you
Let's see if you believe in me
Boo doo bee doo
Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a ring
I don't mean a phone
Santa baby, and hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight
this album is great.
as is this one
cant forget this one
or this one
and cosign on this album..
that said i can handle hearing each song about once a season before i want to stab my ears with a #2 pencil.
Once upon a starry Christmas night Ike Reilly had a song called "Christmas Star" on his website. Sadly I'm not computer savvy enough to have known how to grab it off the web and now it's gone forever...my collection won't be complete until I have that song. Sigh.
my fav is a charlie brown christmas by the vince guaraldi trio. i mean come on. what says christmas like 'o tannenbaum'? listen to that and have a few la conner brewing's tannenbaums made with blackstrap molasses and fermented to about 8% and you are set for the holidaze.
lb, tonight maybe the night for them gingerbrad [ha] men. i believe a charlie brown christmas is on tv tonight.
the ones i don't mind putting on are
elvis presley: if every day was like christmas
bing crosby: white christmas
blue yule: christmas blues and r+b classics
etta james: 12 songs of christmas
and of course
a very special christmas live just for christmas in hollis
okay i went to the mall today and heard that song:
i"ts lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you" four freakin times. this is by far my least favorite xmas song and with versions by kenny g or clone thereof, the carpenters , somebody else and the johnny mathis version i about gagged on my gingerbread peppermint mocha latte!
merry christmas emily by cracker is a great song though.
We aren't allowed to listen to music at work. I would be SO much more productive if I could listen to my iPod! Sometimes I rebel and listen to it at a barely audible level, but then my boss walks by and I quickly turn it off because I'm a chicken.
steven ward, the line is "marlboro lights", you are correct
second on the vince guaraldi -- it has the essential quality of good christmas music, which is that it can be relevant the other 8 months of the year
actually, when i listen to "a charlie brown christmas" i think more of chicago in, like, early november, right after all the trees have lost their leaves but before the first snow -- and the same light as in "the royal tenenbaums" or "american splendor" ... good semi-melancholy partly-sunny Sunday-afternoon-in-mid-autumn sunlight -- of course "the royal tenenbaums" had cuts from a charlie brown christmas so the link is more than metaphorical
oh, and the "nutcracker" suite -- tchaik rocks all year round
Second only to Christmas in Hollis, as noted above, is the Pogues "Fairytale of New York".
It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you
..
You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last
All other Christmas music I hate. Well, that Squirrel Nut Zippers album is OK when compared to all else that is out there.
i cant stand the cliff richard xmas songs, but he just keeps making them, i think he had nearly 10yrs with a song at no1 in the uk at xmas. except for the great year of 1989, when iron maiden's 'bring your daughter to the slaughter' was No1 at chrissy.
(its not really a xmas song but it was knida funny)
Gary Glitter in Glasgow in 1988 (?), hundreds of semi -or completely- drunken scots singing' "Another Rock & Roll Christmas" followed by "Scotland the Brave" (stateless nationalism empathy I guess, I wish we catalans had a sing-along song like that) ..
spaceghost, I have that eartha kitt. And you're right about it - I love your Bad Santa reference - there is room for both sentimentality and nasty humor in my holiday celebration.
liberty bell- yeah the eartha kitt song is great. i love that it gets played in the malls and department stores. too bad they don't play some of the others like grandma got run over by a reindeer, or christmas at ground zero. guess they aren't as, how do you say, consumable as eartha.
and as a point of clarification are we against all graphics or just the ones in the title?
tell my boss that christmas music sucks. he's been subjecting me to it all day, everyday since thanksgiving, and its all this like, lounge music style.
christmas music sucks

my favorite christmas song is the reverend's 'gin and tonic blues'.
i thought it was holiday music.
pagan rituals.
The only genre where you can hear Celine Dion and country music on the same album.
And my co-workers wonder why I'm so cranky.
bryan, then your office must sound like a mall with all the christmas music, right????
im so glad the only radio channel that we play loud (sometimes) in our studio is NPR
Run DMC's "Christmas in Hollis"...
Best
Christmas
Song
EVER!
then there's[url=http://www.emusic.com/album/10599/10599909.html] mojo nixon's christmas album - horny holidays.
a sample of some of his lyrics to 'we three kings':
"we were drunk for three days straight
feeling like we were tom waits"
holiday music can certainly be annoying...but i'm not sure it ia any worse than the sappy adult soft-rock station that one of my co-workers listened to during the other 11 months of the year.
thankfully, the ipod came out about then and it might have literally saved someones life in this case since i was debating whether to simply kill myself or take out the whole firm post-office style.
thank you, ipod. thank you.
I'll second the motion on Run DMC

Come on, we all know that Run DMC was the reason anyone bought "A Very Special Christmas Vol.1"...
Ha ha elves behind the mixing console. Classic.
For the rest of the music out there, I recommend headphones - unless that is office taboo.
It's holiday music from here to Jan 1 in the liberty bell household!

christmas cookies!!! count me in and fire up the andy williams on the old phonograph!
Yeah. Old Christmas music completely rules. Elvis and all that stuff from the 60s that my parents have on vinyl. Classics.
yeah, puddles, I have that Andy Williams Christmas CD too......really.
"Christmas on the Ponderosa" by the cast of Bonanza though - that one was a mistake.
i tire quickly from holiday music but here are a few i like.

e, that sounds like heaven. I'll make some super-gingery gingerbrad men to go with the beer.
Pixelwhore, I didn't know about the Leon Redbone release either! I have some CD shopping to do.
bryan4arch, I apologize but I am highjacking this thread to turn it into a "holiday music suggestions for liberty bell" thread, so sorry!!!
My credit card will not enjoy this thread...but bring 'em on anyway!

"Damn contemporary, bullshit architecture!"
"gingerbrad" men was a typo, I swear it was!!!
But it gives me a good idea for gift cookies for my girlfriends....
I do not have the Etta James, that's a must-have.
typo? hahaha. sure, we all believe you. we all know where your mind is.

Hey I forgot Merry Christmas Emily, and it's about Tucson too! I'll add that to my 2005 holiday mix, vado you just may find one in your stocking.
thank you frau doktor

Strangely haunting, but very classic & chidlike.
Maybe party with Tanqueray TonySinclair

My mom has this damn Anne Murray Christmas album. I hate it so much. I go home what, 3, maybe 4 times a year. Cut me a break and don't play that crap!
go to their Christmas in Frisco link
good times - I'm making it a family tradition to listen to it.
bill o reilly wouldnt approve of these selections.
Gary Glitter in Glasgow in 1988 (?), hundreds of semi -or completely- drunken scots singing' "Another Rock & Roll Christmas" followed by "Scotland the Brave" (stateless nationalism empathy I guess, I wish we catalans had a sing-along song like that) ..

but most Christmas music suck indeed..
spaceghost, I have that eartha kitt. And you're right about it - I love your Bad Santa reference - there is room for both sentimentality and nasty humor in my holiday celebration.
oh yeah and this is another anti-graphic *bump*
The only good christmas song is "Christmas in Hollis" by RUN DMC
liberty bell- yeah the eartha kitt song is great. i love that it gets played in the malls and department stores. too bad they don't play some of the others like grandma got run over by a reindeer, or christmas at ground zero. guess they aren't as, how do you say, consumable as eartha.

Just the ones in the title - messes up the appearance of the discussions page, and slowed it waaaay down, yes?
The Murder City Devils song 364 Days is a good one to listen to as the holiday approaches.
Ooo! Please send an mp3 if possible.
Ooo! Pixel, Please send an mp3 if possible.
tell my boss that christmas music sucks. he's been subjecting me to it all day, everyday since thanksgiving, and its all this like, lounge music style.
You're the bossman. You tell him.
That does sound awful, though.
