proposed nyc subway surveilance

NYC subway system to be outfitted with 1000 cameras, 3000 sensors

"The security sensor technology will include motion sensors, perimeter sensors, intelligent video, conventional closed circuit television and other threat detection systems."

thoughts?

Well this 212 million dollar hightech system would certainly be more effective than broadcasting "if you see something, say something"... the security strategy that we have in the boston T... And it would seem like an effective response to the terrorist attacks in the London subways... But is it me, or does this seem like something out of minority report?

Another feature of this is an underground wireless network so people can use their cell phones in case of a subway emergency.

yo bRink

check out this article gmanaugh recently posted, the medium of panopticon just gets scarier and scarier: CCTV video mixes maps and images

"Smart software is taking CCTV into the domain of 3D gaming by combining graphics, map data, and different camera views in one composite image.

The system automatically tracks and stitches 3D images with CCTV video, maps and other real-time information.

The big advantage is that not only do you have situational awareness, but the system will automatically alert you to intruders, abnormal behaviour, left objects or anything else you tell it to look for"

soon we will be even more gaming-addicted to our own surveillance

nice...

"It is programmed to know what is considered "normal human behaviour" in any given context, so can detect the typical movements of someone speaking on a mobile, for example. "

watch out if you have a habit of making wild hand gestures while talking on a cell phone
