The eight story, 325,000 SF Whitehead Biomedical Research Building is the largest of its kind in the Southeastern U.S. incorporating many energy and water efficient features; earning a Silver LEED Rating in 2002. This facility houses biomedical research laboratories supporting three science departments within the School of Medicine - Cell Biology, Genetics and Physiology. One floor is devoted entirely to interdisciplinary programs for the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Psychiatry, and Behavioral Sciences. Specialized facilities such as animal housing, tissue culture, and environmental health & safety support facilities. The laboratories are designed to support Bio-safety Level 2 and 3 research programs.
