Robert Somol returned to the Knowlton School to finish out his role as the Spring 2016 Baumer Distinguished Visiting Professor.
Robert Somol has been the Director of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) since 2007. He is the editor of Autonomy and Ideology and has served on the editorial boards of Any and Log, as well as the soon-to-be-launched Flat Out. His writings have appeared in publications ranging from Assemblage to Wired, and will appear in his collection of essays, Nothing to Declare.
In addition to giving a public lecture at the Knowlton School, Somol spent three days with the third year graduate architecture students who have been studying his writing and theory throughout the school year. The students studied Somol's theory in conjunction with Neil Denari's work. Denari is this years Baumer Distinguished Visiting Practitioner.
The students were given two projects of Denari's to analyze in the tone of Somol's writing. Students were to use what they knew of Somol's theory and writings on architecture to present an argument to Somol about their chosen projects.
The Baumer seminar, led by Knowlton School Assistant professors, Kristy Balliet and Justin Diles wrapped up following Somol's visit.
