This semester's Energies Lecture series has been unique because of its cross disciplinary nature. The series has focused on bringing lecturers from multiple disciplines outside the confines of architecture, landscape and planning to share ideas that influence design. The Knowlton School was privileged to have Erik Olsen, a partner at Transolar Climate Engineering, give a public lecture titled  "Connect Ideas, Maximize Impact: Climate-Responsive Design through Collaboration".

The lecture, appropriately titled, gave a number of examples of the way Olsen's firm works to create positive environmental impacts through spaces. Transolar partners in projects with a number of leading architecture firms across the globe. Through these partnerships they explore ways in which to minimize environmental impact, save energy and boost efficiency of the spaces they develop.

Olsen's unique engineering perspective brings a different element to the design. These collaborations among architect and engineer have brought about acclaimed climate-responsive buildings. The techniques and ideas for energy efficient buildings have been implemented and employed at various scales of architecture and in multiple climates.

If you want an idea of the innovative work and collaboration performed by the firm check out the particularly interesting project “cloudscapes“ designed in cooperation with Tetsuo Kondo for the 2010 Venice Biennale. "Cloudscapes" is a walkable cloud visualizing climate engineering.
