Passalacqua is a one-of-a-kind experience that evokes another time with a storied and rich history. Nestled on the luxurious shores of Lake Como, its picturesque setting elevates this grand 18th-century villa, which has hosted such notable figures as Napoleon Bonaparte, Vincenzo Bellini, and Winston Churchill.

BAMO was approached by the De Santis family to expand upon their vision for Passalacqua, guiding the restoration in planning and interior architecture to create the comfort of a luxury hotel with respect to history. The villa itself did not influence the design scheme, it dictated it. Inspiration came from opening doors and exploring passages that led to magnificent rooms and centuries old views of Lake Como. All of this gave clues to the villa’s potential design—whether it was the light on water during the day, the ambience twilight created, or the early morning mist. In the main building, richly patterned parquet floors creaked from footsteps past; terrazzo infused with swirling flowers and framework felt cool and fresh on bare feet, and lushly painted ceilings with clouds full of Gods and Goddesses looked down upon us.

BAMO worked closely with the De Santis family to set the stage, helping to determine how best to access the potential of all the rooms across the property structurally, and in a manner that would enhance the guest experience. This included proposing distinct color palettes for each space, drafting furniture plans, creating “imaginative” sketches for select millwork, and creating a custom matelassé for the slipcovers used throughout the property. BAMO’s expertise provided as a background for the De Santis family to layer upon, with final selections reflecting their distinct personality, hospitality expertise, and dream of restoring the magic at the heart of Passalacqua.
