The cardboard chair project was the first major project in my A2 Studio course. This studio focused on human form and how it influences design. The constraints for this project was a huge part of the design, so we began our process by studying joints because we were not allowed to use tape or any adhesives to hold our chair together. We were also limited to three cardboard sheets that measured 8’x4’. Our chair had to hold our own weight during the presentation, so the goal was to develop a final chair and concept that worked with constraints and represented the influence of human form. My chair was a meditation seat that held the body in a relaxed sitting position and was aesthetic visually and held a purpose to the body. The star shaped chair represents the idea that, while meditating, one released negative energy and takes in positive. The points symbolize the process of that energy moving from the center of the chair (where you sit) and out away from the body. I used the criss-crossed sitting position as an influence for the form, which developed into a “zigzag” cardboard joint that was very durable as well as aesthetic.
