Young for Old House is a highly efficient and flexible home designed to meet the evolving needs of its residents, even into old age. Set on a trapezoidal plot of 15x6 to 7 meters at a corner position, the buildable area was quite limited after accounting for mandatory building setbacks. The main challenge was to create a layout with optimal circulation and space efficiency. With a simple yet effective approach, this home brings a multifunctional, comfortable living experience in a compact footprint.
The design focuses on flexibility and comfort, especially in the open-plan space on the first floor. Given its small size, every corner is optimized for multiple uses. Lightweight, movable furniture plays a crucial role, allowing spaces to adapt quickly to different needs—from a relaxed family zone to a private setting or a welcoming area for guests, all with minimal effort.
Surrounding gardens utilize the building setback areas, serving more than just an aesthetic purpose. These green spaces contribute to natural lighting and ventilation throughout the house. Full-height glass walls in the main living area and kitchen open fully to create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors, allowing the garden’s atmosphere to flow into the interior from various angles.
The main floor features an open layout that combines the kitchen and living area into a spacious zone facing the garden, providing unhindered visual flow and easy movement. A guest bedroom is conveniently located on the ground floor, while the master bedroom and children’s rooms are on the second floor for greater privacy. Each room is designed with large windows to maximize natural light and airflow, keeping the house cool and comfortable all day. When additional privacy is needed, curtains can be drawn without compromising comfort.
The home’s interior embraces a warm industrial style, blending exposed concrete, wooden elements, and abundant natural light streaming through large glass windows along one side of the room.
From an exterior perspective, Young for Old House combines modern industrial aesthetics with touches of greenery. The first floor is enclosed with smooth plastered walls and decorated with Vernonia elliptica creeping plants, adding a fresh, natural feel. The second floor is clad in clean white metal sheeting, lending the home a modern, solid appearance. Square windows not only illuminate the interior but also serve as striking design elements on the facade.
Young for Old House isn’t just a comfortable home; it’s dynamic, functional, and effortlessly adaptable to the diverse activities of its residents.
