This is a design for the campus of an elementary school and kindergarten in a mountainous region. My role in the designing process is as a project architect. Through this design, we probed into the possibility of placing making and architecture buildings on the mountain campuses. Taking advantage of the terrain, we created a set-back style so that the classroom on the upper floor could use the roof of the low-floor classroom directly under it as its activity platform. Meanwhile, the tier-upon-tier classrooms form an interesting hillside garden, which is a semi-outdoor activity space. It forms a cool space against the heat in summer and a shelter from the wind and rain in case of rainy weather.
We tried to break the typical box-like pattern of Chinese classrooms through spatial design. Different layers of platform areas are endowed with different functions in order to satisfy the demands of different teaching scenes and courses. Here we tried to divide the basic teaching units into 4 sections, namely, 1. auxiliary space. 2. main teaching space and steeped classroom. 3. outdoor activity space 4. rest space The deconstruction and reconstruction of space breaks through the stiff teaching space confined by standards and conventions. This new type of space brings about various possibilities. Considering that the skylight is greatly conducive to the even distribution of sunlight inside the room.We used the steeped seats at the edge of the set-back platform to make a lighting window.
I participated in the whole process from plan design to construction meetings, from which I gained a wide range of engineering knowledge, especially in the complex relationship between slope building and retaining walls. Now recalling everything, I figure maybe the overall layout still has room for optimization.
