This Hamilton Heights, Manhattan pre-war condominium had little architectural interest following a renovation. The family, from Israel, had two children and needed to utilize the open kitchen, dining, living space both for everyday tasks as well as entertaining larger crowds. In need of more workspace for the kitchen, I added a new island on lockable casters and new triple tear-drop glass pendants to provide both ambient and task lighting. The family loved mid-century modern design. I brought in a clean-lined custom black walnut extendable dining table and custom kidney-shaped coffee table with mid-century-inspired curved lines and angled legs. Since the room got little natural lighting and overlooks a dark courtyard, opaque fabric roller shades let in the light while screening out the lack of a view. A gallery wall features part of the family's large art collection. A bone inlaid mirror in the dining area and new custom-made glass bubble chandelier help bounce light back into the room.
