The Cavity

We believe that architecture, like all forms of intellectual discourse, belongs to the public. We believe that no limitations should be imposed on the public’s access to it. The Bradbury Building, like so many other works of architecture, has been stolen from the public and access to it has been mediated by those who seek to profit from it. We have selected the Bradbury Building among other significant Los Angeles Architecture as a site for our intervention. Through an act of subtraction, we have carved a new entry to the building that circumvents those measures set to keep us out.

Our intervention creates an inserted access point to the building through a simply carved hole. It is expressionless in materiality, but active in form, relating to the larger context of our work. It brings into the foreground the greater vision of public access to all architecture.
Through this act, we invite the public to once again enjoy and benefit from the architecture that
for too long has been locked away from them.
