Transbay Block 8 Competition was an internal office-wide competition at BAR Architects. Several teams within the office took their spare time over a period of one month to create their vision of Transbay Block 8, a San Francisco City block located within the Transbay Redevelopment one. Many of the themes revolved around fairly poetic notions of design which I normal focus on in my own projects and admire in the work of my collegues. My theme, however was based on a more pragmatic approach: economy of means and marketability. In other words, my main goal was to balance a simple form with techniques to construct the most economical structure while attracting the wealthiest, most well connected, and most stylish clients. The result is a stripped down design where every level is tuned to it's specific economic and social strata.
