The Solar Wind Pavilion

The Solar Wind Pavilion

The Solar Wind Pavilion is a public functional art installation specifically designed for use on university campuses. In addition to functioning as a gathering place for the students, the pavilion can make electricity for the university from the sun and from the wind.

The majority of the structure is made of stainless steel and it is mounted onto a concrete base. Four commercially available vertical axis wind turbines are mounted on top of the pavilion at its four corners. One large circular solar cell panel is also mounted onto the pavilion roof, at the center. The wind turbines and the solar cell panel make electricity from the wind and from the sun and send it into the universities power grid.

Four cylindrical shaped spaces and seats are mounted to the four support columns of the pavilion. Students can sit in these spaces and plug their electronic devices into a receptacle located at the top of each cylindrical space. A large round platform designed for sitting and/or lying on is located at the center of the pavilion on the floor. Mounted directly above the platform is a circular shaped electric light powered by the solar cells and wind turbines.
