Industrial Restaurant

Lubbock is a city that is known for Texas Tech University, but there is more to the city than the university. At the intersection of Avenue J and 5th Street, there are two abandoned buildings that were once home to Lubbock Power and Light (LPL). From when the two buildings were created, they were used for LP&L, but this changed when a tornado hit the area. In 1970, the southern most building was affected by this tornado, and it destroyed the east and west facades. The facades were quickly repaired with the use of double t concrete walls, and this allowed for LP&L to quickly resume business within a few weeks. In 1985, the building was no longer in use, and it has been abandoned since.

Today, the area is in use for First Friday Art Trail, which is a big event in Lubbock where the surrounding area opens up to showcase the many works of art while also having numerous food trucks parked nearby. This event occurs the first Friday of every month, and this is the only event that brings energy into the area. During this time, the intersection is blocked off, and it is used as a parking area for those coming to visit. In order to bring energy into the area on other occasions, my proposal is to bring energy into the area with a barbecue restaurant to show the industrial part of Lubbock that was once a major part to the area.

The main building will be a barbecue restaurant. The first change that occurred focuses on the exterior double t walls. They have been removed from the exterior and used in the interior. By doing so, this allowed for the building to open up on the west side by connecting the main entry to the rest of the site, and it allows for both guest seating and space to accommodate for the grills. This also allowed for the area to be implied for guest seating on the ground floor for the guests whether they want to eat alone at the bar, or in larger groups inside and outside. The guests also have the option to relax at the new outdoor garden. In this garden, the existing stacks have been replaced with trees to help absorb the carbon dioxide that is released by the grills.
