2400 Market Street

This is now one of the largest and most visible mixed-use projects in the region, and has become the Global Headquarters for Aramark, the food service, facilities and uniforms company, among multiple other tenants.  Varenhorst and Gensler collaborated on the design, incorporating adaptive re-use of the existing building, and new construction, including a new promenade along the Schuylkill River waterfront.  Options for the design of 2400 Market Street were explored leading up to the final version which houses over half a million square feet of Class A office space, telecommunications infrastructure, restaurant, retail, hospitality and a specialty recreational health and wellness program.  Earlier studies included multi-family residential space for about 350 apartments built above the office space.

2400 Market Street was an existing 5 story building that began its life in the 1920s as a car fabrication plant.  The heavy concrete structure was more than sufficient to permit multiple floors of new space to be built above the old roof line in the final design.
