This semester long project was developed in three separate phases: research and tectonics, typology and concept design, and detailing. The progression from each phase is described in this portfolio as an evolution of design decisions and developments focused on the overall project brief.
The New Public Pavilion is a proposal for a new building to be located in the Giardini Della Biennale of Venice, Italy. Through the studies of context, material and joinery, a method of inquiry was realized and evolved into the design and detailing of the new building.
After working with plywood to develop a spatial module that follows a rule of transparency in which one elevation is solid and another is transparent, a system of intersections were developed with notches to further strengthen the unit as a whole. Cross-Laminated Timber was chosen as the primary construction material to construct the proposed pavilion and a full scale concept model was organized.
The program is now implemented within the volumes and glazing is introduced as the perpendicular enclosure.
The mass is oriented on the site to blend in with the existing garden as an opportunity to discover relief from the urban density without the demand of the popular exhibits within the site of the Biennale.
As a public space and landmark, this proposal will provide refuge.
