Objective:
To design and develop a complete project that is reasonably constructible.
Program:
Public aquarium and academy containing various classrooms, lecture halls, an auditorium, and a library.
Design Intent:
Orientation: The San Francisco city block is introduced to Alcatraz Island to reinvigorate the existing and abandoned parade grounds.
Typology: Utilize the courtyard typology to regulate the experience of the space and to find urbanistic opportunities within the site.
Contextual Circulation: Most of the site's visitors funnel from and around the old barracks building adjacent to the ferry dock. This provides the opportunity to enhance the axial relationship with the primary entry and exit circulation.
Contextual Alignments: The Southeast face of the prison glares directly at the center of the aquarium's orientation. The intent of the design is to react in such a way that amplifies contrast in both the plan and sectional qualities. The layering reactions to the prison and it's topography collude with the spatial sequence cultured by the entry axis throughout all spaces of the aquarium.
