THE MEDIA HARBOR DEVELOPMENT IN SHANGHAI IS PART OF THE CITY’S EFFORTS TO REVITALIZE THE WATERFRONT. GOETTSCH PARTNERS WAS GIVEN ONE OF THE CITY BLOCKS TO DESIGN WITH A MODEST PROGRAM. THE MAIN FEATURE AND CHALLENGE OF THE MASTERPLAN IS THE INCLUSION OF A RAISED PLATFORM TO MAKE THE SECOND LEVEL THE MAIN PEDESTRIAN ZONE. THE DESIGN OF THE PROJECT TAKES THIS IDEA, ALONG WITH THE DEVELOPER’S DESIRE TO HAVE A ‘BOLD, YET EFFICIENT DESIGN’ BY MAXIMIZING THE FLOORPLATES, AND SHIFTING CERTAIN ZONES TO CREATE THIS VISION.
MY ROLE ON THE PROJECT INCLUDED WORKING WITH ONE OF THE FIRM’S PRINCIPLES ON DESIGNING THE CONCEPT THROUGH SKETCHES AND BOTH PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL MASSING MODELS. AFTER THIS INITIAL TASK, MY ROLE SHIFTED TO PRODUCTION AND MANAGING 2-3 PEOPLE ON PLANNING AND PRESENTATION PACKAGES.
