College Park, MD
The primary mission of the Architecture program at the University of Maryland is the education of the next generation of professional architects. The program offers a rich and demanding mix of studio design, history and theory, and technology. Its outstanding faculty, nationally and internationally recognized for achievements in design practice, research, and scholarship, is dedicated to teaching and to maintaining the highest of academic standards.
A synthesis of aesthetic, theoretical, historical, practical, and technical issues form the underpinning of the teaching-learning philosophy in design studio. Maryland's reputation as a leader in design education has been built upon a solid conviction that the intellectual processes of design are inextricably interwoven with and informed by a knowledge of building and construction. Maryland has maintained a long-standing tradition of stressing personal competence and excellence in both design and technology.
Located in the Washington D.C metropolitan area and only a thirty minute drive from Baltimore and Annapolis, the Program offers students access to one of America's most historically significant, culturally dynamic urban regions. Within the School is an architecture library and slide collection that is among the nation's very best. And the academic programs - including independent studies, study abroad, and a self-directed master's thesis - ensure that students with diverse backgrounds and interests have a variety of opportunities for pursuing their careers in architecture.
