Located on Waverly Street in Philadelphia, this infill study took into consideration the existing public/private dialogue as demonstrated by the language of the rowhome facades, as well as client considerations for customized programmatic spaces, intuitive lighting and varied levels of privacy without creating isolation. In order to maintain the continuity of the neighborhood, the facade utilized the common brick, but featured its own personality through a grey glaze and a large window on the second level.

A walk through the client’s home reveals the open sub-level lounge and kitchen space, and associates the act of descending with relaxation. The client may also choose to go directly to the second-level studio space complete with embedded shelving units and a drafting table located near the windows for abundant northern light. The floor area angles toward the staircase to let in natural light for the ground level as well. Another level of stairs leads to the client’s bedroom, featuring a dim light setting using strategically placed sky lighting and offset panels.
