Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Addition

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was built in the 1970s and has since served its parishioners beautifully. However, as the church grew, the building also needed to develop to accommodate greater numbers and additional functions. The Building Committee's main concerns revolved around the glaring light from the western facade, the acoustics in the Narthex, as well as the continuity between the Sanctuary and the Narthex. Moving forward with the knowledge of the existing roof structure, we incorporated a higher ceiling, featuring skylights where needed, and remedied acoustic deficiencies through material and form. Utilizing piers angled perpendicular to the existing geometry, the western facade now functions as an inhabitable set of louvers that block direct western light, while allowing for ambient northern light and also redirecting views away from the parking lot and shops beyond.

The Building Committee consists of church attendees that have taken the time to volunteer for the various late-night meetings that have helped so much to clarify the Church's needs and desired abilities. It has been an absolute pleasure working with this number of individuals, who have exemplified the ultimate collaborative experience through their patience, intuition, communication, and ability to envision solutions without compromise.
