This project is located in Williamsburg, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. The program called for large mixed use development containing housing, commercial and light industrial spaces. At the ground level the building was designed to create pathways through the site that would help connect the streets and create a public space for the building tenants and the surrounding neighborhood.
A parametric model was created in Generative Components to test a variety of design conditions. The variables were influenced by natural ventilation, solar gain, day lighting, program density, and open space. A three dimensional floor component was created at the micro scale so it could respond to the local conditions. This parametric component was then applied to a global system that responded to the macro conditions imposed on the site by the surrounding context.
Built in variability of the Model allowed for fine tuning of the system in response to the numerous pressures applied to the building. In addition to creating a responsive component a uniform structural system was designed to simultaneously adjust to the changes in the component as well as the changes in the global system.
