HOUSE IN CANTABRIA

Poised on the northern side of Cantabria, the location for this house is spectacular: beside the beach, commanding long views out to the sea. The plot had three fig trees that must be preserved.

Approached from the street the house is discreet, hidden by the fence of wood. The entry to the plot is produced across a porch, between the garage, to the left side, and the store, to the right. These ancillary functions are separated from the other stays of the house. On having crossed it, it comes near to a great garden, distributed in terraces that descend around the house towards the sea. Organized in three volumes, the house is placed in the centre of the garden. The entry is the volume that articulates the house. It is a wide and multifunctional space. In the southern part there is a very light volume, made of glass, which contains the main living areas, making a detour of a heavier nucleus formed by the kitchen and a chimney. This volume is situated at the level of the first two terraces. In the northern part there is a much heavier volume, made of stone, dug in the terrain forming this way the level of the third terrace. It contains the bedrooms, distributed from the only constructed elements, which are the bathrooms. The house is configured as one continuous, open and flowing space, and the outdoors are a natural and fluid extension of the interior.

Circulation through the building is organised around a sequence of views that progressively move from darkened to fully lit rooms, revealing the houses natural surroundings. The attention to the play of light and shadow, created through a combination of different materials, is fundamental to the design of the house. Lights and shadows are related directly with the intimacy degrees of the stays.
