Steven Holl Architects has been chosen to design the Qingdao City Culture and Art Center after a unanimous jury decision. Other big-name contenders for the winning spot included OMA and Zaha Hadid Architects.
As part of an extension project in Qingdao, the new design will be 2 million sq. feet consisting of four art museums located in the heart of the city.

The winners have been revealed for the ONE Prize 2013 international design competition! For this year's "Stormproof" theme, participants had to create smartly designed resilient cities ready to face the challenges of severe climate conditions. The Holloway Team was selected as the winners of New Zealand's international "Breathe - The New Urban Village Project" design competition. The team is led by Holloway Builders from Christchurch, NZ in partnership with architecture firm Anselmi Attiani Associated Architects and Cresco engineers, both from Italy. Building and Construction Minister, Hon. Maurice Williamson made the official announcement on Oct. 22 at an event in the transitional Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch. — bustler.net

The Austrian Pavilion by Chris Precht of penda and Alex Daxböck won first runner-up in an international design competition for the Expo 2015 in Milan. Inspired by the strong presence of organic and locally grown foods in Austria, Precht and Daxböck took a creatively literal and communal approach to the 2015 Expo's universal theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." — bustler.net

"BikeHive" by Zijie Cao & Xin Wu of Workshop XZ gives a fun twist to the beehive concept. The proposal was one of over 1,000 entries that submitted to the Timber in the City: Urban Habitats competition where participants had to design a midrise, mixed-use complex that uses innovative wood construction and addresses the housing needs of the Red Hook waterfront neighborhood in Brooklyn. — bustler.net

French firms Périphériques Architectes, a/LTA architectes, and Hamonic&Masson recently sent us their entry for the Cristal Riviera competition from this past June. The skyline of Taiyuan, the capital and largest city of North China's Shanxi province, is scheduled to receive a 280-meter / 919-foot addition soon: German firm HENN has won the architectural competition to design the new Cenke Group tower sporting a slick convex shell. Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) won the RIBA competition to design the new London Police Headquarters, as announced by the Mayor of London, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and RIBA on Oct. 14. Chris Precht of penda / Vienna and Alex Daxböck sent us their recent project titled the "O", an elliptically shaped bridge proposal for the RIBA-sponsored Salford Meadows Bridge International Design Competition. For their entries, participants had to design a pedestrian bridge for Salford, England -- one of the fastest growing areas in the Manchester City Region.
