Aside from wide name recognition, there is little that ties together the work of the firms taking part in the competition. SANAA, which has museums in New York and Toledo, Ohio, to its credit, is known for spare, nearly weightless compositions, while Herzog & de Meuron, designer of the de Young Museum in San Francisco and an addition to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, often wrap its intelligently arranged buildings in unusual, eye-catching skins.
