one of preservation league of NYS's 7 to save for this year
also, it's a really small school. like 500 kids in K-1, if i remember correctly.
follow the money on this one... if it goes, it will be yet another tragedy. especially with the current bidding market, there is no way the costs to remodel would be $30M...
my comment on the petition: on multiple occasions, i have worked with school districts in renovating schools in much worse condition and without the historic importance of this school - saving them money in the process. the fact that this school also already possesses a lot of the spatial and daylighting design strategies that schools are encouraged to pursue these days makes its threatened status even more ironic. please, middletown, do not replace a masterpiece with a parking lot!
and, you're right, holz. $30m seems crazy high for reno of this school. the piece linked by javier says this school was built for 900. we're building a new high school for 1000 right now - including all site development for high school athletics - for $30m. we're also renovating and making an addition to a 1958 school for 720 for $9m.
prices may be higher in middletown ny, and there may be some premium for renovating a masterpiece, but i can't imagine how their costs could be so high.
