More blow-up temporary event space: Designed by the New York firm Diller Scofidio & Renfro, the translucent fabric structure, which would be installed twice a year, for May and October, and be packed away in storage the rest of the time, would transform one of the most somber buildings on the mall into a luminous pop landmark.

or alternatively...

brilliant.
the form is beguiling - as is the temporary nature of it and the event that will make it appear each time - but the purpose is what brings it home:
a neutral-ground public forum in the mall!
let's hope that aspect of it can actually be realized.
It is so Pop, and i love that cause it isn't an Icon in the old 90s sense. Maybe cause it is sort of temporary...
Disturbing.
This is not formally engaging and certainly not practical. Given the state of our economy this seems superfluous.
I would find this more compelling as a temporary intervention if it was engaging. But unfortunately it does nothing to make the Hirshorn better. In fact it takes a great contemporary art and sculpture museum and makes it blah.
Having attending events at the Hirshorn day and night, the interior courtyard provides one of the few event spaces on the Mall that is engaging precisely because of the Bunshaft presented the off-center fountain within the drum. It's one of my favorite buildings on the Mall.
I could see Diller, Scofidio & Renfro's proposal near or even moving through the courtyard but the blob atop looks like nothing more than whipped cream topping.
If the museum's director really wanted to get the power-brokers and elites plugged in and debating 'cultural values' then perhaps this oversized water wiggler http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/24580.jpgwould be better installed on the Mall. Front and center, making the process more open, democratic and engaging to a wider audience.
I think it's a particularly strong counterpoint--something whimsical and dynamic within a very sober, static building. It looks like they will work together quite nicely. And if they don't, it's only temporary.
