The mosque, which is a Unesco world heritage site, has been in rebel hands since earlier this year but the area around it is still contested. — BBC News
Both the state news agency and footage uploaded on YouTube show the 'disappearance' of Aleppo's Umayyad Mosque. The mosque is a Unesco world heritage site but has been at the heart of bitter fighting for several months as rebels try to oust President Bashar al-Assad. In photos published by AP on April 16th it was battered but still standing.

so if I hit the thumbs up for this will it look like a thumbs up for the destruction of world heritage sites?
A real senseless destruction. But can be mostly rebuilt stone by stone. Just like they did the Stari Most in Mostar. Better than nothing and a total loss.
this was possibly an accident of war but religious sites play an increasingly significant role in the increasingly sectarian conflicts there. so expect for these sites to have a political-sectarian valour beyond world heritage. brigades are formed to protect and others to attack some of these sites. we know of this already.syria and the larger region are actively descending into the helish pits of sectarian schisms.
