The huge Palm Springs estate of Bob Hope, the comic icon of midcentury film and television, and his wife, Dolores, is being brought to market for the first time this month, at an asking price of $50 million.
Perched high in the exclusive Southridge community, with panoramic views of the Coachella Valley, including the city of Palm Springs and the San Jacinto Mountains, the 23,366-square-foot home was designed in 1973 by the California Modernist architect John Lautner.

Very nice. And some people in the U.S. live under freeway overpasses ... Just saying.
My friend and SCI-Arc professor Glen Small worked on this project during a brief stint at Lautners office. More on Lautner and Small here

Pointing out that wealth exists despite poverty is a cliche...Just saying
or was observant observing that the design is akin to living under a freeway overpass (i don't think so but 'tis another way to look at it) ... Just saying.

Understood, but the occasional prima donna developer or client with a perceivable "let them eat cake" mentality toward society is annoying. Unfortunately, ours is a profession that is considered noble because it enables human function to take place under enclosed space(s). With a library, a fire station, a school, a chain operated gym location, or even a strip mall, this is the case. When it's wretched excess to flaunt wealth, it's less honorable. Just saying.
it's poverty that exists despite the abundance of wealth, not the other way round. Just saying...
oh and the house and the land it's on is amazing.
Sure, neat house. I'd take Palm Springs easily.
Having done enough custom residential with uninformed clients can be a major pain. There must be statistics as to how building a fancy home pushes a couple toward divorce. Go to commercial and have a client/developer who builds regularly, and it's a "little" easier.
The first thing that got me was the price tag: $50 million.
Someone asked why the closed shape in the Hope house. Lautner said that in crowded Palm Springs there no privacy even with the purchase of six lots combined into one. The house is turned inward . Privacy is why the house has an inward focus.
