Last year I took the pictures of the architects' models, when construction has just started. I just added 6 fresh pictures from the job site.Slideshow, previous, LACMA w/webcam.
i just visited lacma this past weekend and I’m worried. all the attention is focused on broad's new museum and there doesn’t seem any attention to the existing museum where all the problems are. right now, looks like it going to be just another disconnected addition to add to the museum’s horrible layout. we'll see how the next phase turns out, but it kinda makes me miss koolhaas's design.
totallee...the koolhaas design was a legible diagram of reconceptulizing the museums experience and functionality; pianos diagrams look like an afterthought to prove that 'conceptual' work was done, despite how crappy and dated it all looks.
i think renzo's diagrams are nothing but fancy objects, as if they are a different building.
like i said in my previous review, this museum is a challenge when it comes to circulation. 1/3 mile...
however, it still doesn't justify the model diagrams.
i still reserve my final verdict since the building is not done yet. i am glad though it is not going to be one of those bilbao cometh your hometown deals. i think piane have designed some great spaces for art display and art display only.
as far as overall integration goes, LACMA have always been an architectural stew prepared by cooks taking over different shifts but adding their signature ingridients.
let's call it revenge of the mammoths until the inaugural show....
