The Times and the Guardian agree on something(!). The Prado extension, for all its controversy and delays, is a success. Next stop Dubai? I think not.
Jonathan Glancey: “For all its modesty, Moneo's building offers real surprises, and subtle architectural adventures.” Tom Dyckhoff: “Yes, at times the secondary spaces are rather squashed against the set pieces, but to have fashioned so much from apparently so little is little short of miraculous.” Guardian | Slideshow |

when i first read it i thought it was about jorge pardo! swear it.. you can imagine the mixed feelings, i had after the fact it was something else.
anyway, i do find this type of 'restrained museums the most successful due to importance is given to display of art itself, museums position as an institution dedicated to culture and education and few ounces of timelessness. i find norton simon museum in pasadena, originally designed in 1964 by Thornton Ladd and John Kelsey and later renovated in 1996 by Frank Gehry working with executive architect Greg Walsh, as one of the best museums i have seen.
Ha! I don't think the Times have even heard of Pardo. But a Pardo extension at the Prado? Whoa. I can't even begin to imagine...
I'm sure the arch/art dichotomy isn't played out yet but I'm glad there are some signs of reconciliation and sobriety. I actually believe that it's possible to have it all, tantalizing form and ennobling interior volumes etc...and thanks for the Norton reference.
I suppose we should be grateful that this museum survived the man. Ironic that. I remember reading about Simon, the man, several years ago but have yet to visit the NS.
Love the Heath connection.
