Things are changing enormously in almost every sense. The effects of globalization have been positive and negative. My generation of architects is the first that could work almost anywhere in the world. We had the option to repeat the same building everywhere or to push ourselves forward, to create an encounter between ourselves and the local culture. — americancity.org

That is why cities in the West are so morose. We can strive until we’re blue in the face, but we have nothing to change, at least not in the way that other parts of the world will change. In these places — particularly in the Middle East and Africa — real change is happening now.
disagree - there are major changes afoot in infrastructure in western urban areas - they are becoming less auto-centric and more culturally localized and compact - these places he's talking about in the east are more like western cities in the 20th century who were looking to "modernize" their infrastructure. We're at the very beginning of westerners starting to emancipate themselves from cars - it's not just wacky environmentalists anymore. Things are changing.
