To promote and provoke the development and circulation of new ideas, Pamphlet Architecture is again offering an opportunity for a new generation of architects, designers, theorists, urbanists, or landscape architects to publish their designs, manifestos, ideas, theories, ruminations, hopes, and insights for the future of the built and designed world. www.pamphletarchitecture.org
What are the real issues facing architecture today? Has fashion replaced ideas as the prime concern of architects? Has surface triumphed over substance?
Pamphlet Architecture has served as an incubator of architectural ideas and experiments for over 20 years, largely through its internationally acclaimed series of publications. When the architect Steven Holl and publisher William Stout established the Pamphlet Architecture series, their intention was to provide an independent vehicle to criticize, question, and exchange views. In an era when questioning authority was the order of the day, a series devoted to challenging the wisdom of the elders of architecture fit perfectly into the political and cultural ferment of the 1970's. Twenty-six years later, Pamphlet Architecture hopes to continue this tradition by sponsoring a juried competition open to any architect practicing in any area.
amphlet Architecture was founded in 1977 as an alternative to the mainstream architectural press. Its goal is to encourage young architects and writers to put forth their ideas, theories, and designs in modest, affordable booklets that can be easily produced and purchased, to ensure a continuous, serious debate and discussion about architecture. Its success is legendary: Pamphlet Architecture helped launch the careers of architects from Steven Holl and Lebbeus Woods to Zaha Hadid, and has had an influence that far exceeds the ad-hoc nature of these humble publications.
