it has to do with contemporary life, which architecture sometimes acknowledges...
there is still a discrepancy in the profession between the number of women starting a career in architecture and the number who stay. that has something to do with the level of respect and support they get.
At the very least, when speaking with clients today, I should be able to name who won the Super Bowl. Similarly, knowing that someone who had as tremendous an effect on contemporary culture as did Betty Friedan passed away is a piece of knowledge we all should have.
I'll use this forum to state again my belief that the aspects of professional architectural practice that would make it more accommodating to women would are by no means gender-specific; the same changes would make it more accommodating to men too, especially men with families.
