Google Zeitgeist's data reveals that the most popular natural disaster for 2005 was the Tsunami, followed by Hurricane Rita and with poor old Katrina being the third most interesting.
It actually shows that the search peak for "tsunami" was higher than that for "hurricane" and that there were more searches for the word "hurricane" when Rita hit than when Katrina hit. However, more people searched for the word "Katrina" than searched for the word "Rita."
