BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) has collaborated with modular architecture company Nokken to create Softshell, a semi-permanent, timber-framed tent designed to address sustainability challenges in hospitality and residential design.
Softshell is a response to the rising demand for adaptable structures that harmonize with their surroundings while minimizing ecological impact. Constructed from glued-laminated timber and a recyclable canvas, the lightweight structure prioritizes portability without sacrificing architectural integrity.
“This project reimagines what a mobile structure can achieve,” explains Finn Nørkjær, Partner at BIG. “Softshell moves beyond the aesthetic of temporary design, offering something that blends seamlessly into the environment while delivering a sophisticated spatial experience.”
The modular foundation system, built to adapt to uneven terrain without excavation, highlights Nokken’s commitment to preserving the landscapes it inhabits. According to Nathan Aylott, Creative Director of Nokken, this approach reflects a broader shift in how architects and developers are rethinking off-grid and low-impact building strategies.
“Softshell is a tool for architects, developers, and hospitality providers to create unique, site-sensitive spaces,” says Aylott. “Whether it’s a forest, desert, or coastal site, the structure combines flexibility and sustainability in ways that align with contemporary architectural priorities.”
The design allows for multiple configurations, including hospitality suites, garden studios, and creative workspaces. It also reflects a growing trend toward modular, semi-permanent architecture as a means of addressing the climate and regulatory challenges associated with conventional construction.
Softshell prototypes are currently being tested in remote locations, with availability expected by summer 2025. Pre-orders open December 4, 2024, with prices starting at €18,950 (£15,900 / $22,500).

It's a modern, more complex yurt.
I was going to say, If someone wants this now, Colorado Yurt company does Yurts and tent structures...
This is a fun design though...
