Following our previous look at an opening for an architectural designer at Samara, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a CNC Programmer, Operator, and Fabricator at OTTRA.
The role, based in Brooklyn, calls for an individual interested in using digital skills to fabricate hardwood furniture, objects, and installations. Among the responsibilities for the role will be customizing existing designs on request, building new projects from start to finish, and producing shop drawings.
The open role at OTTRA offers us the opportunity to explore recent engagements by architects in furniture design reported by Archinect. OTTRA is itself an embodiment of this collaboration, existing as the furniture brand of architecture and design firm Zimmerman Workshop.
“As an architect myself, we have hired architects and designers in the past with great success,” Zimmerman notes in the Archinect Jobs listing. “This position is perfect for someone looking to change it up while still utilizing their digital expertise gained working in the fields of architecture and design. Come here to do what you're already doing, but where you get to actually build what you're drawing.”
OTTRA is one of several recent examples of collaborations between architecture and furniture design. Last week, we reported on SOM’s collaboration with Italian manufacturer Neri on a collection of outdoor urban furniture products, while earlier in November we reported on a new skateable furniture product by Ontario-based designer Zenga Bros.
In August, meanwhile, we reported on the opening of the new Eames Institute Headquarters Workspace in Richmond, California, celebrating the contributions of Ray and Charles Eames to the world of interior and product design, as well as covering Berlin-based architect and designer Adorján Portik’s unique ‘Halfway to the Infinite’ furniture series.
Job Highlights is one of a number of ongoing weekly series showcasing the opportunities available on our industry-leading job board. Our Meet Your Next Employer series profiles and interviews interesting studios with open positions currently available on Archinect Jobs, while our weekly roundups curate job opportunities by location, career level, and job description.
