Following our previous visit to Cover, we are keeping our Meet Your Next Employer series in Los Angeles this week to explore the work of Laney LA.
A multidisciplinary studio based in the Hermosa Beach Arts District, the firm has amassed a portfolio from private homes to masterplans. The firm describes its ethos as to “create work that speaks powerfully; sparking a dialogue between enduring architecture and its evolving environment.”
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for an Associate to join their Hermosa Beach team. For candidates interested in applying for a position or anybody interested in learning more about the firm’s output, we have rounded up five California homes by Laney LA that exemplify the firm’s ethos.

The SC Residence is defined by scalloped concrete walls, reflecting themes of organic erosion and subtraction. Concrete massings anchor each elevation, intersecting the structure at carefully chosen points. The faint grain of the formwork is visible, enhancing the texture of the walls, reminiscent of cliffs shaped by water. The home’s massing features a voided base designed for living, opening through large pocket doors and double-height spaces to an outdoor terrace and pool.

The 1,400-square-foot HT Residence was conceived as an exploration of the potential of compact living and emphasized sustainability over predetermined outcomes. The design blends a nostalgic gabled silhouette with modern features like passive ventilation to merge past traditions with future-forward practices. The exterior showcases a minimal palette contrasted by the bold geometry of the gabled form, while the interior reveals an artistic and playful character. Highlights include hand-painted De Gournay wallpaper in the master bath, over-grouted limestone, and Portuguese cobblestones, creating a tactile and timeless experience.

The SA Residence integrates the warmth of earth and clay with a textured backdrop of linen and limestone, using light to enhance depth and vibrancy throughout. At the double-height entry, a 16-foot Australian Brachychiton tree establishes a bold connection to nature. The layout centers on an expansive outdoor courtyard, ensuring fluid interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces, while key elements such as a ceramic bell chandelier and a custom locally sourced dining table contribute to the home’s sense of timelessness.
