Following our previous look at an opening for a Capital Projects Manager at the DC Public Library, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for an Art Director at the University of Southern California.
The role, based in Los Angeles, calls for an individual to “lead the direction of all materials and visual media produced by the school.” Among the responsibilities for the role will be overseeing the school’s visual brand identity across media and publications, as well as leading creative design projects according to the school’s brand. The school hopes to attract applicants from those with a “thorough understanding of digital media and evolving online platforms” as well as expertise in photography, typography, and printing.
The open role at USC comes only weeks after Archinect interviewed the new Dean of the institution’s school of architecture, Brett Steele. In our conversation, Steele offered an insight into his priorities for leading the school in the coming years; outlooks that will intersect with the brand identity that the next Art Director will seek to capture through creative media.
“My priorities are about elevating design and critical forms of practice,” Steele told us. “It’s in our mission, our vision, and, for me, an absolute priority today — as practice itself evolves in so many new and exciting ways.”
“Despite our name, we’re not a single-subject school,” Steele added. “Our courses and programs are in architecture, for sure, but also landscape architecture, building science, and historic conservation. Here, those are all gathered together under a single roof in ways that we can take advantage of the distinctly collaborative, cross-disciplinary ways the 21st century is already being worked on. That sensibility is built into our DNA, and we’ve got to leverage that potential.”
Elsewhere, the USC School of Architecture’s Fall ’24 events series is currently underway, with upcoming lectures scheduled with Eui-Sung Yi and Tatiana Bilbao. Lawrence Scarpa, co-founder of Brooks + Scarpa, will visit the campus to speak about his new book Salty Urbanism and the impending crisis facing coastal cities on November 13th, preceding Jesse Reiser's lecture on Weaponizing Craft on November 15th and RIBA Charles Jencks Award winner Anupama Kundoo on November 22nd.
