Following our previous look at an opening for an Exhibition Designer at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for an Architect at Shigeru Ban Architects.
The role, based in New York City, calls for an individual with 6 to 10 years of experience, working to develop documents for cultural, community, and residential projects. The practice is particularly interested in candidates who have worked on projects that are “inventive, carefully detailed, with well-integrated building systems.”
Why the role interests us
The open role at Shigeru Ban Architects offers us the opportunity to profile a selection of recent projects by the acclaimed practice, who often experiment with materiality in addition to undertaking activist work with relief communities around the world. Last month, for example, the firm’s Paper Log House opened at The Glass House with the help of Cooper Union architecture students, where a two-day assembly process created a 13.5 by 13.5-foot enclosed structure using the special paper log house technique Ban invented in the 1990s.
At the beginning of the year, Shigeru Ban and the Voluntary Architects’ Network collaborated on earthquake relief efforts in western Japan. The team deployed their Paper Partition System to offer users indoor privacy in the wake of a recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake. Months before, the firm collaborated with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Architecture, and Hawaii Off-Grid Architecture and Engineering to construct temporary accommodation for residents in the aftermath of the deadly fires on Maui.
Earlier humanitarian efforts by Ban include deploying Paper Log House prototypes in Morocco in response to a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in September 2023, and shelters for locals in the aftermath of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey in May 2023. Elsewhere, the firm has recently appeared in our resource guide for architecture-related volunteering opportunities as part of National Volunteer Week.
