Various Ukrainian news outlets are reporting the recent near-total destruction of the Mykhailo Boichuk State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design in Kyiv from a Russian missile attack in the morning hours of Monday, March 25th.
"During this morning's attack on Kyiv, as a result of falling fragments of a missile launched by the Russian Federation, the central part of the building at the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boichuk was destroyed, particularly the sports hall, congress hall and exhibition center. The premises of the departments and the auditorium of the institution suffered significant damage," a press update from the country's Ministry of Culture and Information Policy reads.
News reports indicated that only two people were injured during the attack, which was part of a larger aerial assault on the capital's Pecherskyi and Solomianskyi districts. (You can read more about the attacks here via The Kyiv Independent.)
Photos taken from the Academy's Facebook page appear to show severe damage to the gym, exhibitions center, and concert hall.
One student told Pravda.com, "We had classes, but nothing was going on in the room hit by part of the missile. Classes were talking place…we have blended learning. The missile hit the gym, though. According to the schedule, there was no physical education class, and thank God, no one was injured, no one took the keys to the gym. The assembly hall and congress hall are partially damaged. They were also closed, because we mainly hold various events, exhibitions, and conferences there. And those were not scheduled for Monday morning."
According to a recent survey from the World Bank, Ukrainian government, European Union, and United Nations, more than one out of every five (21%) of all institutions of higher learning within the country have been lost or damaged since the full-scale Russian invasion began in February of 2022. The capital region has suffered an estimated total of $155 billion worth of damages to buildings of all types through January of 2024, as per a recent report from the Kyiv School of Economics.
