Any $100K + jobs at any other cities besides LA, SF, NYC ? It would still tough to live in those cities even at that salary.
100% this. My salary a few years out of school in a medium-cost city was nearly 90k when adjusted for inflation from then to now. Who is moving to NY or LA to slave away 60+ hours a week at these places for relatively mediocre pay?
A few possible reasons:
1) Visa sponsorship: Firms that are able to and want to sponsor the thousands of international graduates tend to cluster around major cities like LA and NY
2) Starchitect firms: These tend to be HQ-ed in the same major cities too. For fresh grads who want to work on prestige projects such as museums and concert halls from a design architects' scope, heading to NY, LA, SF etc is almost inevitable.
3) Quality of Life: Varies by person of course but there's a sizable contingent of fresh grads and young professionals who appreciate the work and personal opportunities offered by big cities - not to mention a cultural infrastructure to support ambitions such as personal exhibitions.
In some circles, a stint working in NYC (never mind if all you did was cut blue foam and pick up redlines) is an essential credential for a fancy architect.
