The American Institute of Architects today announced the appointment of a nine-member delegation that will represent the professional body at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) ahead of its commencement this Thursday in Dubai.
In a separate announcement today, AIA says its 96,000-strong community is one of the “best kept secrets” in the fight against climate change. As such, the aim of its envoy is to foster strategic partnerships with industry and government in addition to promoting much of the AIA’s own climate platform and 2030 Commitment. Their input will provide a valuable source of knowledge for policymakers while advocating for the better health of the built environment overall, the Institute states.
“AIA and its delegation are eager to attend COP28. Being here ensures the voice of architects is heard in the global conversation about urgent climate change. Buildings are currently responsible for 40 percent of carbon emissions,” 2023 AIA President Emily Grandstaff-Rice said at the announcement. “In bringing together U.S. and international allies across the built environment in Dubai, architects are leading with urgency to decarbonize, improve public health, and give the world the best chance to meet the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold.”
The following members will be present at the two-week conference:
The AIA is also leading the UNFCCC Side Event titled “Design Thinking, Global Standards, & Integrative Solutions for a Net Zero Built Environment” with help from the Royal Institute of British Architects and other industry groups on December 8th.
Hosted by the United Arab Emirates, COP28 will officially open on Thursday, November 30th, and extend to December 12th. A preview of the AIA's activities at the conference featuring Azaroff and Grandstaff-Rice can be read in full here.

Of course they will. Please tell me they will be traveling by wind powered sailing vessels.
It's just hilarious. You can't make this stuff up.
And I just realized that I'm late on my dues. To the checkbook! I'd hate for any of the nine essential personnel to miss out on the two-week mutual admiration festival.
it's all a joke and we are the punch line

I would hold out for Davos, myself. More interesting architecture there as well. This Dubai place reminds me of Las Vegas on some kind of drug. And the conference is sponsored by an oil company. You cannot make this stuff up.
