The David R. Ravin School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte has shared its 2023/24 on-campus events programming as part of our Get Lectured series. The event cycle is one element of the school’s full-year "New South | Global South" initiative, which includes new course offerings and research projects in addition to the slate of programming that is being curated by Associate Professors Nadia Anderson, lecturer Julio Diarte, and research fellow Elena Vazquez as organized by Associate Professor Marc Manack.
The school shares: “The New South meets Global South lecture series will highlight research and design practices that address the colonial injustices of the New South and the Global South and celebrate their marginalized peoples and practices. The featured presenters are working to overcome social injustice by investigating topics such as territory, housing, immigration, race, social inequity, and civil rights. Their works provide insight into overcoming injustices while producing innovative solutions to issues including climate adaptation, sustainability, resilience, integration, and identity at scales ranging from regional territories to building materials.”
Events begin on September 27 with Exponencial S.A. co-founder Juan Carlos Cristaldo’s lecture, which is followed by an appearance from the new Global War on Terror Memorial designer Marlon Blackwell on October 2. Former Wheelwright Prize winner Germane Barnes follows Blackwell on October 9, preceding a visit from Mississippi State University assistant professor Silvina Lopez Barrera on November 8 to conclude the Fall.
The next term begins with a lecture from the Parsons School of Design’s Housing Justice Lab Founding Director Gabriela Rendón on January 17, followed by Assistant Professor Vernelle A. Noel’s presentation on February 7. Lectures continue on March 15 with a visit from Reiko Hillyer, and the series culminates the next month with lectures from Ghanaian architectural scientist and designer Mae-ling Lokko-Ma on April 3 and another from UNC Landscape Architecture Professor in Practice David Gerard Gouverneur on April 10.
All lectures will take place on campus in the Boardman Auditorium in the Stoors building on the UNC Charlotte main campus unless otherwise indicated. Learn more about the school's event programming here.
