Following last week’s visit to California-based Brooks + Scarpa, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Philadelphia this week to explore the work of CosciaMoos Architecture.
Founded in 2010, the architecture and interior design firm believes that “architecture isn’t just about designing buildings; it’s about working together to design creative solutions.” The studio’s resulting portfolio includes commercial, mixed-use, healthcare, and interior projects, shaped along its three values: Be creative and make it cool; challenges are growth opportunities; and relationships are everything.
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring a Project Manager – Nationwide Healthcare & Retail Projects. For candidates interested in applying for the position, or anybody interested in learning more about the studio’s work, we have rounded up three projects by CosciaMoos Architecture that blend old and new architectural elements.
Commissioned by residential developers Post Brothers, the Hamilton Court Amenities Building sits within the courtyard of an existing historic Venetian Gothic structure currently containing contemporary apartments. “They asked us for a glass box,” the design team explains. “We came back with a glass box shrouded in a sculptural metal and steel veil. Though it wasn’t what they were expecting, they loved it and asked us not to change a thing.”
The ground floor of the courtyard building houses retail space, with a second-floor gym above. The scheme is topped by a 2,000-square-foot rooftop terrace holding a lounge pool, sundeck, outdoor gaming area, and landscaped greenery. The new structure is wrapped in a perforated aluminum skin, whose perforated openings were designed to balance sunlight and views with shading and energy loads.
The Popular sees an existing warehouse from 1918 transformed into a modern apartment complex with office spaces and amenities. Originally constructed for the Strawbridge & Clothier department store, the 400,000-square-foot warehouse has been renovated with a goal to “preserve the building’s unique historical character, while also offering contemporary amenities.” Among the new facilities are a 10,000-square-foot gym in an area once used by trains to load and ship goods, as well as a music studio, rooftop pool, dog run, playrooms for children, and art studios.
“The cornerstone of our design was an approach that seamlessly added these modern conveniences, while successfully retaining the character of the original warehouse,” the team explains. “We maintained many of the existing components of the building, such as exposed concrete and mammoth ceilings, as well as interior walls with large adjoining windows, sheer glass, and marble floors to elicit the structure’s industrial past.”
The Marriott at Pencoyd Landing is situated on the riverfront site of the former Pencoyd Iron Works, and is intended to “both remind visitors of the area’s 20th century industrial heritage while offering its guests a comfortable, contemporary experience.” The team sought to retain as much of the existing built fabric as possible, including several existing trusses, and reusing the surviving metal skin.
The resulting scheme includes a saltwater lap pool, fitness center, game room, fire pit, a multi-purpose conference room, and a rooftop reference. In addition to showcasing the existing ironworks, the hotel also incorporates a section of a recreational trail that will eventually connect Center City, Philadelphia with the surrounding suburbs.
