Following last week’s look at an opening for a Staff Architect - Wastewater Division at Parsons Corp, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for an Intermediate Architectural Designer at Seed the North.
The successful candidate will join Seed the North’s architect-led ecological restoration company located in northern British Columbia, Canada. Set on a 160-acre property, the company is overseeing the construction of a seed orchard and campus, for which they require a remote-working experienced designer.
Why the role interests us
The open role at Seed the North offers us an opportunity to explore an example of architects and designers delivering projects with an emphasis on responsible timber use. The company operates under a design-build model, working with local craftspeople and locally sourced timber from harvesting to finishing. The company’s smaller projects embody a “Builders of the Pacific Coast” aesthetic while larger schemes merge local timber frame building culture with industrial minimalism.
“In compromised ecosystems, Indigenous communities are affected by having less land access for traditional uses, less habitat for fish and wildlife, less economic diversity, fewer job opportunities, declines in essential social services, and an increasing urban-rural divide,” the company says about its approach. “A huge opportunity exists to regenerate northern communities and our landscapes while mitigating the climate crisis through high-impact carbon sequestration at a national scale.”
The role at Seed the North comes at a time when our editorial has featured several projects grounded in the responsible use of timber. Last week, we covered the construction of a mass timber nature observatory by an IAAC team in Barcelona, while in March, we reported on the completion of a timber-clad home in a Polish forest by Mobius Architekci Studio.
Last year, meanwhile, electric car company Polestar announced the completion of KOJA, a treehouse designed by Finnish designer Kristian Talvitie which balanced architectural beauty with a commentary on the climate emergency, while a Virginia Tech team completed a world-first observation tower with innovative low-carbon timber. Beyond completed works, our editorial also reported on a recent paper by LEVER and Atelier Ten which sought to “debunk four mass timber myths.”
