Following last week’s visit to New York City-based Workshop/APD, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Los Angeles this week where we meet Relativity Architects.
Founded in 2013 by Tima Bell and Scott Sullivan, the practice now operates offices across Los Angeles, Colorado, and Spain. With a stated ambition of “materializing inventive solutions into influential, evocative, and functional design projects,” the studio has built a diverse portfolio from residential and commercial to institutional and creative studios.
Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for several positions across their Los Angeles office. For candidates interested in applying for a position, or anybody interested in learning more about the studio’s work, we have rounded up five media and technology studios by Relatively Architects that exemplify their pursuit of “culturally relative architecture.”
For their Capture Studio project, Relativity Architects remodeled an existing two-story theater in Studio City. Inside, a former parking garage on the lower level has been converted into spaces for performances and events, while the upper level houses a cutting-edge photo studio and office.
Major design interventions included the removal of an existing mezzanine and partitions to fully express the ceiling on the second floor. Outside, a full modernization of the decade included turning a utilitarian staircase into a statement piece screened by hanging plants.
Also known as “The Cube,” the new Siren Production Studios encompasses a 13,000-square-foot motion picture production sound stage and a 3,000-square-foot annex support space. A central node in the wider Siren Studios master plan, the facility is capable of shooting a range of media from magazine advertisements to full-length feature films.
In order to maximize the studio’s flexibility, the facility is supported by 35-foot-tall steel trusses as well as walls clad in recycled Styrofoam-insulated concrete blocks. Relativity Architects were also engaged in the wider studio master plan, which includes two towers with further production offices and shooting facilities.
A 150,000-square-foot campus with 15 small stages, the BuzzFeed Campus is described by its designers as “the blueprint for an internet content company.” Responding to the wide variety of content produced by BuzzFeed, the facility is spread over two Hollywood blocks housing hundreds of “light editing” stations and 12 kitchens.
Inside, a modern industrial aesthetic offers a range of working spaces from open-plan offices and lounges to freestanding meeting and conference pods. The campus also features an outdoor “backlot” for the filming of quick, impromptu content.
Completed in 2017, the 19,000-square-foot studio for the TV show Dancing With The Stars was designed to cater to both rehearsals and filming. For the scheme’s interior, Relativity Architects sought to create a “striking design across multiple studios that allowed for the dancing to shine yet still gave the extra flair needed for a major television production.”
The renovation project places an emphasis on a rustic adaption of natural materials, including masonry finished in bright paint and branding iconography, and expressive timber framed roofs.
