The results are in for Archinect readers’ annual Pritzker Prize predictions!
Following this discussion forum thread and quick social media polling, Archinectors have come up with their best guesses (along with the usual sarcastic responses) as to who will succeed recent laureates Balkrishna Doshi, Lacaton & Vassal, and Diébédo Francis Kéré for architecture’s highest honor before the winner of this year’s prize will be officially announced tomorrow, March 7th.
The polls on Archinect's Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram channels produced a nearly neck-and-neck tie between David Adjaye and David Chipperfield, likely in response to their mid-career and recent works (including the recent Abrahamic Family House and James Simon Gallery, respectively) and ignoring their criticisms and minor controversies. Moshe Safdie, who just published a memoir and opened important new buildings in South America, was another popular name, along with Jeanne Gang and Obama Presidential Center designers TWBTA: Tod Williams Billie Tsien.
Many of the responses in the forum offer their own insightful guesses as to this year's winner and the direction of the prize generally.
monosierra said: For the Americans: Jeanne Gang - who has a whole slate of big institutional projects nearing completion. Or one of Williams Tsien and DS+R, who are a study in contrast. Maybe W+T when the Obama Center opens. DS+R already has a bunch of signature projects done ... I guess a knock would be R's huge influence in turning the firm from an artistic duo to a commercial juggernaut.
luvu added their prediction that: Tatiana Bilbao / maybe not this year but will win eventually
ae_0 predicted: not necessarily personal, an overall guesstimation; Toshiko Mori, Barclay & Crousse, Patkau Architects, Vector Architects
Non Sequitor added: I'd honestly like to see more international attention to Omar Gandhi but 90% of his work is high-end residential.
...to which JLC-1 replied: really nice work by Gandhi, and you said "but his work is mostly high end residential", why is that a disqualification for this prize? I think I know the answer and want to see what others think.
Finally, cloi chimed in, citing other popular names: smiljan radic, selgascano, vo trong nghia. safe choice for dsr and david chipperfield(adjaye is obvious but just want to give some change). underdog for xu tiantian and shim sutcliffe
(Of note: Bjarke Ingels was noticeably absent from the predictions as much as the chances of Steven Holl's eventual prize win were debated.)
The correct guess will garner the first three people a bag of Archinect's own Brutal coffee. Stay tuned for the results tomorrow when the announcement goes live!
